Why I Founded Crayon and Paper
My Journey Through Graves’ Disease and Back to Connection
For over a year, Graves’ disease left me feeling isolated, helpless, and too weak to work. The condition caused hyperthyroidism, and eventually my whole thyroid had to be removed. After undergoing a thyroidectomy, my health slowly improved, and I began reconnecting with people around me.
I realized there are many others—especially the elderly, those living with illness, or people from minority groups—who feel the same sense of isolation. With the support of my partner and community, I found a way back to social life. Crayon and Paper was born from that journey: a space to heal, connect, and create together.
Support us so we can do more great work
Crayon and Paper is a community-led initiative that runs entirely without council funding. We rely on donations and a portion of our paid class revenue to keep our programs alive. While we proudly offer free classes, there are still essential costs we must cover—like rent, art materials, and public liability insurance.
Our founder, Sophie, shares our vision: “Art should be for everyone. We believe creativity and self-expression should never come with a price tag. That’s why we offer free colouring-in sessions to all members of the community, no matter your age or background.”
Every contribution, big or small, helps us bring more art, connection, and creativity to those who need it most.
